A new project by John Buckman.

Over the years I've met some really fascinating people. I've never seen them interviewed in an intelligent, conversational style. It's always "one-damned-question-after-another".

I thought: maybe I could do better?

Idearchive is a project currently in development with a projected launch of Fall 2012. I'll be presenting videotaped conversations with some of these interesting people.

The idea is simple: meaningful conversations, on video.

Here is an interview on Youtube of Steve Vai, very much in the conversational style I'm hoping to emulate. Notice the intelligent questions, the casual style, and how (above all!) the interviewer doesn't interrupt.

Here is another video interview style I like, where Philip Glass answers a question he wished were asked. The interviewer interrupts Glass with a stupid question ("people say your music all sounds the same") and after dismissing it, goes back to answering the question he liked. A good lesson on when the interviewer should shut up and let the interviewee keep talking.

I made up a list of people I'd like to have a video-conversation with, who I know well enough to ask if they'd be willing to be video interviewed (though they might say "no thanks"!).

Some of my top picks from my list are: Mark Shuttleworth, Ted Nelson, Tim O'Reilly, Brewster Kahle, Paul Graham, Kevin Carmony, Richard Stallman, Peter Sunde, Cindy Cohn, Joi Ito, Stewart Brand, John Perry Barlow.

Like the Philip Glass interview mentioned above, I'd release ±10 minute clips where the interviewee spoke really well for a period. If the interview went particularly well, there might be several 10 minute videos released. And of course, the complete conversation would also be available.

This is not a project that will make money: it's a labor of love, like my BookMooch project.
